Women's Tennis Hosts BSU for Senior Day Friday at 10:30 am
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — For UNM’s five seniors, it’s one last chance to play at home. It’s also a chance to start some momentum towards a Mountain West Tournament that UNM has plenty of opportunity to win. The final stretch run for UNM starts at 10:30 am on Friday morning when the Lobos host Boise State on Senior Day.
UNM and head coach Vicky Maes will be honoring five seniors; Maud Vandeputte, Sarah O’Connor, Maria Sodre, Sofia Taborga and Allison Romero in a pre-match ceremony.
Last year UNM took down Boise State on the road, no small feat, winning 4-2, getting a clinching win from Sarah O’Connor at No. 2 singles, a place she figures to be again. O’Connor has been playing well, earning a win on Friday a week ago in comeback fashion against Air Force after losing the first set but winning in three. Maud Vandeputte likewise has done the same, as she is currently undefeated on the season at No. 1 singles.
Sodre has actually been UNM’s hottest player with thre straight wins and two undecideds in which she was lead in sets 1-love. Taborga has anchored UNM at the No. 6 slot for most of the season, posting an 8-4 mark there. Romero made her MW season debut two weekends ago and is the reigning Delta singles champion at the Air Force Bedford Cup in the Mountains.
The Lobos will have a tall task on senior day with Boise State coming to town. The Broncos are 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the Mountain West, but they have been a tale of two teams, going 12-0 at home but just 1-5 on the road. That one was a 6-1 win in Minnesota over St. Thomas, a former Division III powrehouse that is transitioning to Division I. It won’t get easier for UNM as it’s last two matches are both on the road against nationally-ranked opponents as UNM takes on No. 48 San Diego State on Sunday at 1 pm Mountain Time before ending the season next week at No. 70 Nevada, which is 15-2 overall. Both San Diego State and Nevada are tied for first in the league at 6-1. SDSU handed UNM its only Mountain West loss last year.
