DeLeon Named MW Freshman of the Week
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The Lobos earned their third Mountain West Freshman of the Week award and fourth overall weekly conference award of the season as Jessica DeLeon was named MW Freshman of the Week Monday.
DeLeon joins fellow freshmen Natalie Fritz and Miracle McKenzie in garnering the freshman award and is the third Lobo in the last five weeks to win the award.
The San Marcos native led the Lobos on the week with a .692 batting average, .846 slugging percentage, nine hits and seven RBI and finished with three multiple-hit games and two multiple-RBI games. DeLeon recorded at least one RBI in all four games.
Of note, DeLeon made Lobo history in the first game at Utah State, going 5-5 and becoming not only the first player to go 5-5 in a game, but the first player to record five hits in a game in program history. Her leadoff double in the fourth inning later led to the Lobos tying the game at two on a McKenzie home run, and her double in the fifth inning drove in two runs to put UNM up 4-2. Her sac fly in the seventh inning put UNM in front 6-5 with the Lobo catcher finishing with a season-high two doubles and led the team with three RBI.
DeLeon went a combined 7-7 in the doubleheader with the Aggies, adding two walks and one RBI on a single in the second inning of the second game to give UNM a 3-2 lead.
Her offensive contributions continued against the Broncos, hitting a sac fly in the third inning that allowed Emma Bramson to tag from third for the 2-0 Lobo lead, which also proved to be the game-winning run in the 2-1 Lobo win. In game two, DeLeon singled through the right side to bring in two runs to open the scoring in the first inning and led the Lobos with two RBI.
In MW play, the Lobo freshman is hitting .424 (tied for ninth among MW players), with a .432 on-base percentage and .545 slugging percentage behind 14 hits (tied for 13th) and 10 RBI (tied for 11th). Her four doubles are tied for third in the conference and her two sac flies are tied for the conference high.
