Lobos Drop Game Two in Fresno, 11-3

by Connor Gilbert

FRESNO, Calif. – Presley Monteforte tossed four scoreless frames in a row to close after some early trouble and Jordy Oriach launched his league-leading 10th home run of the season while scoring twice, but the New Mexico (16-14, 6-5 MW) couldn’t pull within striking distance as Fresno State (14-16, 7-4 MW) clinched the weekend series with an 11-3 win Saturday afternoon at Beiden Field.

After falling behind early, the Lobos cut the deficit to 4–1 in the fourth on Oriach’s solo blast to right. They mounted a brief rally in the eighth, loading the bases before Luke Mansy slashed an RBI double to make it a 7–3 game, but the Bulldogs responded with four runs in the bottom half to put it out of reach.

On the mound, freshman lefty Presley Monteforte (6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) took the loss in his first collegiate start, allowing four runs in the first two frames before keeping the Bulldogs off the board in each of the next four to exit the game with new career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts. RHP Jack Messmore and LHP Matt Cornelius pitched the final two innings, combining to allow seven runs (three earned) as Fresno State put the game away late.
