AWENDAW, S.C. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team climbed the leaderboard with a strong final day on Tuesday at the Hootie at Bulls Bay. The Lobos shot 17-under during the third round at Bulls Bay Golf Club, the second-best round of the day, to move up four places from ninth to a tie for fifth at 21-under overall.
Purdue and South Carolina tied for the title, both finishing at 30-under. Furman was third at 27-under, followed by Charleston in fourth at 26-under and the Lobos and Missouri tied for fifth at 21-under.
Carson Herron had his second individual top-10 of the season, shooting a final round 67 on Tuesday to finish T-9th at 8-under. Alvaro Portillo had the best round of the day for the Lobos, a bogey-free 7-under 65 to tie his low collegiate round and finish the tournament at 4-under. Mesa Falleur shot 70 on Tuesday to finish at 5-under, while Wyatt Provence shot 69 to finish at 2-over. Oliver Cage rounded out the lineup with a 73 to finish at 5-over. Clark Sonnenberg, playing as an individual finished at even par after shooting his low round of the season, a 5-under 67 on Tuesday.
“I am really proud of how we played as a team today,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “Last night, we challenged them to focus on the process of hitting great shots instead of being so focused on the result. After that, we can live with whatever happens but we needed to understand that in order to play great, we first needed to get out of our own way.”
The Lobos will return to action April 11-12 for their regular season finale, the ASU Thunderbird Intercollegiate in Phoenix.
