Men's Tennis Makes it Five Straight with Shutout of UTSA

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico remained unbeaten at home, whitewashing UTSA to the tune of a 7-0 shutout as the Lobos won their fifth consecutive match and third straight since breaking into the national rankings.  The Lobos open conference play next week hosting Nevada in their only match of the week on Thursday at 1 p.m.

New Mexico basically blitzed the Roadrunners, and UNM’s winning formula of taking the doubles point and winning in singles with Aram Noroozian and Avery Tallakson held more than true.  The doubles was a 2-0 sweep with Noroozian and Georgio Samaha winning 6-3 over Miguel Alonso and Tiago Torres.  That combined with Aditya Balsekar and Avery Tallkason winning 6-2 over Luke Cantu and Enzo Vargas.

That gave UNM a 1-0 lead, which these days might as well be 3-0.  And it was.  That’s because Noroozian and Tallakson have been on heaters that have seen each win eight straight.  Noroozian won at No. 1 over No. 96 Tiago Torres which actually clinched the match, and Tallakson won 6-4, 6-2 over Alonso.

UNM got its second point when Samaha, who all of a sudden seems to be completely back on track, won 6-0, 6-2 over Oskar Grzegorzewski.  Dario Ciobotaru won 6-3, 6-2 over Vargas and then Noroozian clinched the win.

Playing everything out, Aditya Balsekar won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles over Danjal Muminovic and was 5-0 before Tallakson won against 6-4, 6-2 over Alonso.

That left just Daniil Kakhiuk, who won 6-4, 6-7 (10-12), 1-0 (10-7) to make it a clean sweep of the Roadrunners.

NOTES: Noroozian and Tallakson have each won eight straight, and Kakhniuk has won six in a row … Noroozian and Samaha, ranked No. 67, have won five straight and are 17-5 overall together … UNM now has 99 singles wins on the year.
