Lobos Downed Late in Sunday Finale at Nevada

by Connor Gilbert

RENO, Nev. – New Mexico (12-11, 4-2 MW) took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning of its weekend finale with Nevada (14-9, 3-3 MW) on Sunday thanks to a solo homer from Josh McAlister but couldn’t hold off a late push from the Wolf Pack in the bottom of the inning, falling 7-5.

The Lobos tallied 12 hits – their fifth game with double-digit hits in their last six conference games – with Will Asby (1-for-5, HR, RBI) and Josh McAlister (1-for-4, HR, RBI) each delivering solo home runs. Jordy Oriach (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) drove in a pair of runs with his RBI double in the fourth, while Brodey Williams (2-for-4, 2 2B) doubled twice. Khalil Walker (2-for-3, R) and Cooper Brass (2-for-5) also recorded multi-hit games.

In his seventh start of the year, RHP Dayne Pengelly (4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 6 BB, 6 K) battled through early innings but exited with the game tied. RHP Diego Alvarez (3.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) got the Lobos out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth but took the loss after allowing Nevada’s go-ahead runs in the eighth, while RHP Josh Barnhouse (0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K) retired the only batter he faced to finish the eighth upon Alvarez’ exit.
