Wolf Pack Run-Rule Lobos to Even Weekend Series
RENO, Nev. – New Mexico Baseball couldn’t keep up with an offensive deluge from Nevada on Saturday at Peccole Park as the Wolf Pack run-ruled the Lobos 20-4 in seven innings to hand them their first conference loss and tie up the weekend series at a game apiece.
With their four-game win streak snapped, the Lobos drop to 12-10 on the season and 4-1 in conference games – should they clinch the series with a win in tomorrow’s series finale, it’d still be their best start to MW play since 2017.
After UNM held the Wolf Pack scoreless in 11 of 12 innings in Friday’s weekend opener, Nevada scored 10 runs on 11 hits in the first three innings before UNM could get on the board in the top of the fourth thanks to Ethan Ott’s fourth homer of the year. Tye Wood tacked on two more with a two-run double in the following frame and Caleb Herd went yard for the third time this season in the seventh to bring in another, but a pair of five-spots from Nevada in the bottom of both innings kept things out of reach.

In total, the Lobos collected eight hits, with Ott (2-for-2, HR, RBI) and Herd (1-for-3, HR, RBI) providing the team’s two home runs. Cooper Brass (2-for-4, 2B, R) and Tye Wood (1-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI) added extra-base hits, while Khalil Walker (1-for-3, R) and Josh McAlister (1-for-2) added a knock apiece.
After striking out 22 times in Friday’s 12-inning game one, the Lobos only went down on strikes three times in seven innings on Saturday, but Nevada pitchers induced a total of eight flyouts and nine grounders without issuing a single walk to keep things quiet on the basepaths.
RHP Ryan Castillo (2.0 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) started for UNM and was tagged with the loss after Nevada struck early, dropping to 3-2 on the season. The Lobos cycled through multiple arms the rest of the way, with Matt Cornelius (0.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 0 K), Jack Messmore (2.0 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K), Cristian Mogen (0.2 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) and Tommy White (1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K) combining to throw six innings.
