Lobos Falter Late in Weekend Finale at Tarleton State

by Connor Gilbert

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – New Mexico held a lead until the final frame of its weekend finale with Tarleton State on Sunday until the Texans (8-9) stunned the Lobos late with two runs on three hits to seal the series with a 4-3 walk-off win.

The Lobos (8-9) return home to open up Mountain West Conference play next weekend, hosting UNLV (10-5) for a three-game weekend series at Santa Ana Star Field March 14-16.

The Lobos managed seven hits, led by Jordy Oriach (1-for-3, 2B, RBI, HBP), Will Asby (1-for-4, 2B), and Khalil Walker (1-for-4, 2B). Akili Carris (2-for-4) was the only Lobo with multiple hits and drove in two runs, while Brodey Williams (1-for-3, BB) and Ethan Ott (1-for-4) both added a single apiece.

Oriach extended his team-best on-base streak to 13 games with his RBI double that brought in Asby to put UNM on the board in the first, with all 10 of his multi-hit games this season in that span.

In his fifth start of the season, RHP Dayne Pengelly (3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 K) kept the damage minimal after working around early trouble and left with a lead. After a shutdown frame of relief in Saturday’s Game Two, RHP Josh Barnhouse (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K) returned with two more scoreless frames to set the table for RHP Ty Cunningham (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), who retired eight in a row with a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth but took his first loss after allowing the go-ahead runs in the ninth.
