Lobos Post Third Place Finish at Southern Highlands Intercollegiate
LAS VEGAS, Nev. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team concluded a strong performance against an elite field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate during Tuesday’s third round at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Playing against 11 of the top 30 teams in the nation, the Lobos shot 5-under during the final round to cap a third-place performance at 7-over, finishing ahead of nine top-30 teams.
Second-ranked Auburn won the event at 9-under, as the Tigers were the lone team under par. Host UNLV was second at 1-over, followed by the Lobos at 7-over. No. 9 Virginia was fourth at 10-over, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 11 Florida, No. 24 Pepperdine and No. 26 Texas A&M all tied for fifth at 19-over.
Wyatt Provence led the Lobos, earning his top-10 finish of the season, tying for sixth at 1-under after a final round 69. Alvaro Portillo also earned a top-10, finishing T-9th at 2-over after an even par final round. Mesa Falleur shot 2-under on Tuesday to finish T-12th at 3-over, while Carson Herron also finished at 3-over after a final round 72. Clark Sonnenberg rounded out the lineup with a 13-over total.
“To have four players finish in the top 12 in one of the deepest tournaments in college golf says a lot about our golf team,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “This week showed that we can play with the best teams in the country if we stay disciplined and committed. I am so proud of how we battled through tough weather conditions all week and finished strong.”
The Lobos return to action next week with a trip to San Diego for the Lamkin Invitational.
