Lobos in 2nd Place Through Day Two at MW Indoor Championships

by Connor Gilbert

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Alyssa Gregory won the women’s pole vault title with a record-breaking 4.16m clearance and Brodie Young blew the UNM 200m record out of the water with the first-ever sub-21-second performance indoors in school history to highlight Day Two at Mountain West Indoor Championships on Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center, with New Mexico still in contention for both the men’s and women’s team titles ahead of tomorrow’s final day of competition.

With Day Two in the books, Colorado State leads both the men’s and women’s team scores with 46 points in the men’s and 58.50 points on the women’s side. The Lobos sit in second in both team scores with 42 men’s points and 45.50 women’s points.

Gregory’s 4.16m mark stands as a new UNM record – the best women’s vault all-time across indoors and outdoors – surpassing the previous indoor program record held by Amber Menke (4.11m) that had stood since 2012. She’s only the third woman in program history to win a MW Indoor pole vault title.

In the first hurdles action of the day, Pietra Campbell Simoes (8.46) and Semaj Thompson (8.36) both put down new personal bests that rank #2 and #6 on the UNM women’s and men’s all-time lists, respectively – they both advanced to tomorrow’s finals with fifth- and eighth-place finishes on Day One.

All five Lobo women made it through prelims in the mile, with Pamela Kosgei (4:46.10) running the fastest time of prelims ahead of Alice Seguin (4:50.77), Natalie Bitetti (4:50.62), Sophia McDonnell (4:52.03) and Hanna Bruckmayer (4:55.08). Kosgei, Seguin, Bitetti and McDonnell auto-qualified for the final with Top-Two finishes in their respective heats, with Bruckmayer qualifying on her time.

On the men’s side, Matthew Kosgei posted the fastest time of prelims (4:08.95) to lead four Lobos that moved on to tomorrow’s mile final – Joshua Abraham (4:09.44) and Iker Sanchez (4:09.63) finished in succession behind Kosgei in the second heat to snag all three automatic qualifying spots and Collins Kiprotich (4:13.45) won a slower-paced first heat to join them.

Judy Rono cruised to a 2:08.44 heat win to secure her spot in tomorrow’s 800m final – her specialty event – and Dylan Burrows (1:51.42) and Matthew Endrody (1:52.09) both finished second in their respective heats to do the same on the men’s side.

In his first race as an attached athlete for New Mexico, football player-turned-track athlete Cam Watts put the conference on notice with a dominant showing in his heat of the 60m dash, winning with a 6.68 (6.70 converted) time that ranks No. 3 on the UNM all-time list. It’s the fastest time since Ridge Jones ran a converted 6.62 at MW Championships in 2015, a program record that still stands to this day. Watts has a chance to shock the conference tomorrow in the final with a podium finish – his time today would rank No. 3 on the Mountain West indoor list.

Watts actually isn’t the first Lobo to make the switch from the gridiron to the track – in 2022, former UNM wideout Luke Wysong finished sixth in the men’s 60m dash with a 7.45 time. But  Watts’ 6.68 performance was faster than all but two of the last 10 conference champions, with one being Jones’ 6.62 performance that won him an individual title in 2015.

Brodie Young, Lou-Anne Pouzancre Hoyer and Rebecca Grieve all qualified for finals in both the 200m and 400m, with Young running a huge personal best of 20.80 – the fastest time in the men’s 200 prelims – that stands as a .36-second improvement from his previous best set three weeks ago at the UNM Team Open (20.80) and .13 seconds faster than the previous converted school record of 21.00 held by Jay Griffin. That record had stood since 2020.

The final competitor of the night for UNM, Alyssa Magallanez jumped a new personal best of 1.69m to finish tied for fifth, scoring 2.5 points for the Lobo women.
