Lobos Take on Grand Canyon and NAU

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A trip to Arizona is on the schedule this weekend for The University of New Mexico as the women’s tennis team takes on Grand Canyon, a future Mountain West member, on Friday and then Northern Arizona on Sunday in Flagstaff.  There will be no live video of the matches, but the Grand Canyon match will have live scoring.

The Lobos are coming off a 5-1 loss to Tarleton State, a loss which ended UNM’s four-match winning streak.  The Lobos have had a hot hand in No. 3 singles player Sarah O’Connor, who won both of her singles matches last week.  Despite the loss, the Lobos are sitting at 6-5 on the year, and the two matches this weekend are the final matches in the non-conference portion of the schedule.

Grand Canyon is 5-5 on the season and 1-1 at home.  Grand Canyon is 0-2 against Mountain West foes, having lost to San Diego State 4-1 and Fresno State 4-3, although GCU has a win over Gonzaga 4-1, a team that defeated New Mexico.  GCU has been successful in the middle flights for singles, going 8-1 at No. 3 singles and 7-1 at No. 4 singles.

Northern Arizona is 4-3 on the season but 3-0 at home with a 7-0 win over Cal State Fullerton and a pair of 7-0 wins over Mesa Community College.  NAU also has a 7-0 win over Idaho State.
