Lobos Fall at Wyoming
LARAMIE, Wyo.— The Lobos fell 59-40 to Wyoming on Wednesday night, hindered by poor shooting from the floor and three-point range. UNM went 15-47 from the floor and 4-23 from three-point range, trailing for 38:17 of the contest and by as many as 22.
Amhyia Moreland was the lone Lobo to reach double figures, starting off 6-6 in the first 20 minutes and finished 6-8 for 12 points to tie her season high. The next closest Lobo was Viané Cumber, who finished with eight points that included two three-pointers
A Hulda Joaquim layup tied the game at two on UNM’s second possession 1:20 into the game before Wyoming scored the next nine points. Moreland’s first basket ended the run with the Lobo forward getting another basket out of the media timeout to cut the deficit to give at 11-6. Moreland made it a 6-0 run to make it a three-point game with an Alyssa Hargrove three-pointer two possessions later cutting the margin to two at 13-11 with 2:49 left. It was the closest UNM got in the game after Wyoming closed the quarter with the final four points for the 17-11 score at the end of the first.
Moreland reached double figures off of a Hargrove steal that led to a fast-break layup with 4:54 left in the second quarter, which made it 21-15. However, a Wyoming 6-0 run made it a double-digit deficit at 27-15, with a Cumber three before the time expired narrowed UNM’s deficit to eight at the half at 31-23.
Destinee Hooks opened the third quarter with a basket to bring UNM within six, but the Cowgirls responded with consecutive three-pointers and a layup to extend the gap to 14 three minutes into the quarter. A Nayli Padilla three-pointer with 4:58 left was the final basket for UNM in the quarter that made it 40-32 with Wyoming making a three of its own with 1:51 left, the start of a 9-0 run for the Cowgirls for the 49-32 score through three.
A Wyoming basket to start the final quarter stretched the deficit to 19 with Joana Magalhães splitting a pair of free throws at the 8:01 mark for UNM’s first points of the quarter. Both teams struggled in the first five minutes with the two Wyoming points and one UNM point holding as the only points at the media timeout at the 5:22 mark. Out of the break, UW scored the next four points to push the deficit to its largest point at 22 with the Lobos cutting it down to 19 three times on a Lara Langermann free throw, two free throws by Drew Jordon and a final basket by Jordon with 1:03 to close the scoring.
Wyoming outscored UNM 10-8 in the final quarter with UNM scoring 17 points in the final 20 minutes.
