Lobos Shut Out Aggies in First Rivalry Matchup, 7-0
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. โ Dayne Pengelly and four other New Mexico relievers combined to throw a two-hitter, Jordy Oriach went yard for the third time in as many games and the Lobos blanked New Mexico State 7-0 in their first rivalry matchup of the season Tuesday night at Santa Ana Star Field.
The Lobos (5-4) are winners of three in a row for the first time on the young season, snapping a three-game streak for the Aggies (5-3).
Pengelly threw five shutout innings โ holding the Aggies to just one hit in that span โ while striking out four and walking two to earn his first win of the season (1-0). The bullpen backed him up with four shutout frames, including 1-2-3 innings from Josh Barnhouse and Daxton Purser โ the latter striking out the side in the ninth to end the game in emphatic fashion.

Jordy Oriach powered the UNM offense with a 2-for-3 performance, blasting his third home run of the season and driving in three runs. Will Asby added a two-run double, while Brodey Williams went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Lobos (5-4) plated six runs in the first three innings and never looked back. Ethan Ott added a triple and scored a run and Karsen Waslefsky, Khalil Walker and Akili Carris all singled while scoring a run apiece.

The Lobos struck early, manufacturing a run in the second before exploding for five in the third. Oriachโs two-run single capped a rally that included a two-run double from Asby and Williamsโ RBI single. They added one more in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Cooper Brass after loading the bases to threaten to run-rule the Aggies late.
The Aggies never found an answer, managing just two singles while striking out nine times. The Lobos turned two double plays and didnโt commit an error en route to their first shutout victory of the season.

With the win, UNM is 168-95 all-time against their rivals to the south, with a 79-34 record in home matchups after winning the two teamsโ only matchup last year in Albuquerque on March 19 and a 63-52 record in Las Cruces. UNM went 1-2 against the Aggies in 2024 before their initially-scheduled fourth game in Albuquerque was scrapped due to weather. Tod Brown is 8-4 against the Aggies in his tenure as UNM Head Coach.
