SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The New Mexico women’s golf team began play Monday at the Bruin Wave Invitational with the opening two rounds of play at Valencia Country Club. Playing against a field of seven top-80 opponents, the Lobos are in sixth place with a total of 35-over after 36 holes of play.

The Lobos shot 14-over during the morning’s first round, followed by 21-over during the afternoon’s second round. Co-host UCLA is the 36-hole leader at 2-under, the only team under par after the opening day. Arizona is second at 13-over, followed by Baylor (22-over), co-host Pepperdine (29-over), Long Beach State (31-over) and the Lobos.

Freshman Maria Garcia is in the top-10 individually after day one, shooting 72 and 75 to finish the day T-6th at 3-over. Rebecca Galasso is at 7-over after rounds of 72 and 79 on Monday. Maria Caparros Levin is at 12-over, Chelsea Truong is a 13-over and Annie Saechueng is at 17-over.

“We didn’t capitalize on our birdie opportunities, especially when it got windy in the afternoon,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “They held tough, though, in the blustery conditions.”

The Bruin Wave Invitational will conclude Tuesday with the final round of play at Valencia Country Club.
