Gomez Earns Bronze on Final Day

by Frank Mercogliano

HOUSTON, Texas — Isabella Gomez capped a terrific week of diving by twice breaking the UNM 5-dive record for the platform, earning bronze on the final day of the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championships.  San Diego State won a fourth consecutive championship, and sixth in seven years, but official results and team standings were delayed.

Gomez was the only Lobo to quilify into the finals, and she did it with a 284.3, breaking the UNM record for the platform (5 dives), besting the 267.4 by Aubrey Bush, who accomplished the feat in 2010. Gomez advanced to the final, and through three dives, she had the slimest of leads, 175.65 to 175.55 over Nevada’s Bailey Heydra.  In fourth but lurking was two-time defending platform champion Valentina Lopez Arevalo. Despite trailing Gomez by 9.2 points, her fourth round dive was the dive of the night.  Her back 2 1/2 somersault pike from the 10m platform scored her 87 points on the strength of five 10s and two 9s.  That catapulted her into the lead and she would never relinquish it.

Gomez wasn’t done, scoring 60 and 58.7 on her last two dives to clinch the bronze medal, UNM’s only podium finish of the championships.

Overall, Gomez qualified for the championship final in the 1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard and platform, and she was part of UNM’s team diving team that finished third.  In the platform, Alice English finished 17th and Arianna Pelligra was 23rd.
