Taborga Clinches 4-3 Win at Abilene Christian
ABILENE, Texas — Sofia Taborga put an end to a roller coaster day, clinching a 4-3 win for UNM over Abilene Christian with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jess Board as UNM won a fourth consecutive match and moved to 6-4 on the season. The team will stay in Texas and head to Stephensville for a match with Tarleton State tomorrow at noon.
While UNM dropped the doubles point, it looked like UNM would be just fine. Having to play three matches at a time due to the number of courts available, UNM’s top three in the order all won. Rebakkah Gaines won 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) over Masha Vrsalovic at No. 1, Sarah O’Connor won 6-4, 6-4 over Angela Del Campo at No. 3 and Maud Vandeputte won 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at No. 2. That made it 3-1, but it wasn’t an easy finish.
Abilene Christian made a run, winning at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, taking a 6-4, 7-5 win for Maria Cascos over Maria Matsoukatidi and a 6-1, 6-1 win for Alice Klinteby over Maria Sodre. However for UNM, SOfia Taborga was in control pretty much the whole way, winning in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 over Board for the win.
NOTES: Vandeputte has won seven singles matches in a row and is 2-0 at No. 1 and 5-0 at No. 2 … the win for Taborga was her fourth in a row … the doubles loss for Matsoukatidi and Taborga was their first of the season as a duo.
