The Lobos will open the 2025 schedule with three straight non-conference games. UNM will travel to the Big House for the first ever meeting with the Michigan Wolverines on August 30 in the first of two Big Ten games for UNM. The Lobos open the home era for Jason Eck with a matchup he knows well, facing Idaho State on September 6. Eck went 3-0 against the Bengals in “The Battle of the Domes” in his three seasons with Idaho. UNM will play a second Big Ten game, this time heading west to face UCLA on September 13. The Bruins were in the Pac-12 when the game was scheduled, but have since switched conferences.
It will be the second all-time meeting between the two programs, as UCLA defeated the Lobos 27-13 in the 2002 Las Vegas Bowl. That game was historic and it marked the first time a female played in an FBS game and in a Bowl game as Katie Hnida attempted an extra point in the game.
After the first of two scheduled byes, UNM hosts rival New Mexico State on September 27. Jason Eck will look to be the fourth straight Lobo head coach to win his Rio Grande Rivalry debut. That game is the first of six games over six straight weeks. UNM will open conference play with back-to-back road games, facing San Jose State on October 4 and two-time defending Mountain West champion Boise State on October 11. New Mexico has lost six straight in San Jose, last tying in 1971 (21-21) and last winning in 1969, a 27-24 victory for UNM. Those two weekends coincide with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. The Lobos have just one win all-time against Boise State, coming 10 years ago 31-24.
UNM opens the home portion of conference play as the Nevada Wolf Pack pay a visit on October 18. UNM has lost three straight to Nevada since a 35-26 win in 2016 in a game that finished at 1:10 am due to a lightning delay. The next week UNM will again be at home for the only back-to-back home games on the schedule, and it will feature UNM’s previous head coach Bronco Mendenhall and the Utah State Aggies. Last year UNM beat the Aggies in Maverik Stadium 50-45 in the largest second half comeback (16 points) in school history.
November 1 sees the other MW Championship game opponent on the schedule as UNM makes its second trip to Allegiant Stadium to face UNLV. The Rebels and UNM didn’t play last year, and the two teams had been tied all-time 12-12 before UNLV won the last three in the series. That game is the sixth of six straight weeks of play for the Lobos, who have their second bye-week over the November 8 weekend.
The home stretch has UNM playing two of three at home. The Lobos host Colorado State on November 15, travel to Air Force on November 22 and then host San Diego State in the final game of the season. With the 2025 MW schedule announced, the Conference’s national television partners, CBS Sports and FOX Sports, will now initiate a selection procedure that will include shifting some games to non-Saturday dates. That will be followed by the identification of network outlets and kick times.
