WACO, Texas — Baylor’s lineup in singles of nationally-ranked players proved to be a tall task for the New Mexico Lobos on Sunday, but a 6-1 loss for UNM doesn’t diminish the arrival of No. 1 doubles team Aram Noroozian and Georgio Samaha, who sent a message to the tennis world with a 6-2 thrashing of No. 3 nationally-ranked doubles team of Os Brostrom Poulsen and Marko Miladinovic.
That win paced UNM to a 2-0 doubles sweep and a 1-0 lead in the match, and while the Lobos were a game challenge, in the end Baylor had a little too much.
Noroozian and Samaha faced off with ranked foes. Noroozian at No. 1 lost to No. 25 Devin Badenhorst 6-4, 6-2 and Samaha played No. 58 Poulsen at No. 2 singles and lost 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. The other ranked match had UNM’s Aditya Balsekar falling at No. 4 to No. 54 Zsomber Velcz 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Those three were the last three matches standing as Daniil Kakhnium, Dario Ciobtaru and Avery Tallakson all lost in straight sets.
The Lobos now have a week off before a three match in four days stretch from February 14 through the 17th against Oregon, Louisiana and Portland.
