Matsoukatidi Named MW Freshman of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Maria Matsoukatidi was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week after going 3-0 in singles and doubles for UNM in a two-day weekend sweep of rivals UTEP and New Mexico State on the road.  It’s UNM’s first weekly honor of the season.

Matsoukatidi, who goes by Marika and hails from Soloniki, Greece was UNM’s lone freshman in the lineup.  She recorded a perfect 3-0 mark on the week, competing at No. 3 doubles and No. 4 singles.  Against UTEP, earned a 6-3 victory to claim the opening point in a doubles sweep, and the next day after picking up a 6-3 doubles win against New Mexico State, she came from behind in singles (5-7, 6-4, 6-1), to break a 2-2 tie and pave the way for New Mexico’s victory.

The Lobos are on the road this weekend in Texas, facing Abilene Christian on Friday and Tarleton State on Saturday, both matches starting at noon Mountain Time.
