Five Lobos Score in Double Figures as UNM Wins at San José State

SAN JOSE, Calif.— A season-high five Lobos scored in double figures, led by a game-high 18 from Destinee Hooks as the Lobos left San Jose with a 72-65 win over San José State.

With the win, the Lobos are 15-12 on the season, 8-6 in conference and 5-2 in MW road games.

Nayli Padilla finished with 13 points off of the bench, Alyssa Hargrove scored 11 points and Joana Magalhães and Viané Cumber each finished with 10 points to round out the double-digit Lobos. In addition, Hargrove led with three blocks to tie her career high and had three steals, one of three Lobos to finish with three steals (Cumber and Magalhães). For Hargrove, it was her 12th game with three or more steals in a game.

On the boards, Hulda Joaquim led with 11 rebounds with six on the offensive end.

UNM used a 10-0 run in the first quarter over the span of two minutes that gave UNM a 12-4 lead, with UNM making five consecutive shots and behind four points from Hooks and Magalhães in that stretch.

The Lobos led 12-8 at the end of the first with three players pacing the team with four points each (Joaquim, Hooks and Magalhães).

Hargrove opened the second quarter with a layup and the Lobos continued to build their lead, growing the margin to double digits at 11 4:46 into the quarter and led 26-13 on a three-pointer by Hooks with 3:58 remaining in the quarter. However, SJSU cut the lead to four at 28-24 with 1:27 left before Cumber made a layup for UNM’s final points as the Lobos led 30-26 at the half.

Hooks led all scorers with nine points with Magalhães at eight points, two steals and two rebounds. Hargrove had two steals, two blocks, three rebounds and four points at the break.

UNM had six steals at the break and led for 18:07 and by as much as 13 in the first 20 minutes.  Of UNM’s 30 points, 20 came in the paint.

The teams traded baskets in the first two minutes of the third quarter with the Lobos building the lead up to seven at 37-30 at the 6:34 mark, but SJSU tied the game at 40 with 2:49 left and took a 43-40 lead in the game, its first since it was 4-2. A Cumber post up and jumper followed by a Joaquim layup put the Lobos back in front 44-43 with the Spartans making a free throw for the final point of the quarter to tie the game at 44 through three.

UNM scored the first four points of the four quarter which included a Hooks’ layup and Padilla hitting two free throws off of an intentional SJSU foul less than a minute into the quarter. A SJSU three put the home team in front 53-51 with 6:05 left to play, but a Padilla and-one restored UNM’s lead. Following a Spartan and-one, Amhyia Moreland tied the game at 56 and started a 6-0 run as Hooks made another layup and Hargrove registered her third steal and made the layup.

A Hargrove three turned a two-point game into a five-point game with 3:21 remaining with the Spartans unable to get any closer than three down the stretch. A Hooks three-pointer extended UNM’s lead to six at 68-62 and the Lobos closed at the free-throw line with Joaquim and Cumber splitting a pair before Cumber made two with 13 seconds remaining for the final points of the game.

UNM outscored SJSU 28-21 in the final quarter, shooting 9-12 from the floor and 2-3 from three-point range. In the final 20 minutes, UNM shot 51.9% from the floor with 22 points coming in the paint to give UNM 42 of its 72 points in the paint.
