Lobos Downed at Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. – New Mexico Baseball outhit Arizona 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning of Tuesday’s midweek matchup at Hi Corbett Field before the Wildcats (1-3) plated 10 runs on 10 hits over the next four innings to hand the Lobos (2-2) a 10-0 run-rule loss in seven.
Reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Week Cooper Brass stayed hot with another multi-hit performance, leading UNM with a pair of singles – Akili Carris and Gene Trujillo both added one more apiece to make it a four-hit outing in total.
Through the first three games of his collegiate career, Brass is batting .800 (8-for-10) with a 1.818 OPS – he’s only struck out once and grounded out once in that span.
In his first start and first appearance as a Lobo, RHP Diego Alvarez held the Wildcats to just one hit without any runs on the board through the first three frames before a three-run triple in the bottom of the fourth broke things up and cued his exit. He finished with three punchouts without issuing any walks.
LHP Matt Cornelius (0.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K), RHP Josh Barnhouse (1.0, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K), LHP Matt Romero (0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K), RHP Luke Wiseman (0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) and LHP Presley Monteforte (0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) combined to throw the rest of the game.
