by Connor Gilbert

After running one of the Top 10 fastest 400m times in the nation on Saturday, New Mexico’s Brodie Young was named Mountain West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row on Tuesday.

BRODIE YOUNG | MW Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
After breaking Jarrin Solomon’s nearly 16-year-old school record in the men’s 400m and a 37-year-old Scottish national record the week prior, Brodie Young posted another stunning improvement in the 400m on Day 2 of the Don Kirby Elite at the ABQ Convention Center, winning the men’s invite sections with a 45.66 raw time (45.77 converted). That performance moved him up to No. 9 in the nation, right in the thick of contention for a spot at NCAA Indoor Championships. Only the Top 16 declared entries in every non-relay event qualify.

Young put some distance between himself and the previous Scottish record of 45.98 with an improvement of three-tenths of a second. The junior had only recorded three sub-46 performances across the first of his collegiate career – all outdoors – but has now done so twice in his first two 400m races of the 2025 season, with Saturday’s time ranking No. 4 on the UK all-time list. His previous indoor best heading into this season was a 46.54 he put down at the Don Kirby Elite meet as a freshman in 2023.
