Tru Washington Named Mountain West Player of the Week

by Steve Kirkland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Tru Washington was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Washington was honored after leading the Lobos to a pair of wins that extended their win streak to eight straight games.

Washington’s honor is the first of his career. He becomes the third different Lobo to be honored this season, joining Nelly Junior Joseph (four) and Donovan Dent (three). New Mexico’s eight total awards this season is a school record and one shy of the Mountain West record of nine awards by BYU in 2010-11.

Washington follows Joseph, who had won the award the previous two weeks, and Dent the week before that. It marks the second time in Mountain West history that a team had a player honored in fourth consecutive weeks (2010-11 BYU – all by Jimmer Fredette).

In the two victories, Washington averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game. He shot 54.2 percent (13-24) from the floor, including 50.0 percent (6-12) from deep.

In the 71-67 victory over Wyoming on Wednesday, Washington scored nine of his 15 points in the second half as the Lobos erased a 10-point halftime deficit. He concluded the week with a career-high 25 points in the Lobos’ 82-79 win over Utah State in a battle of the conference’s top two teams. That performance was capped by a three-pointer, his career-high fourth of the day, with 9.4 seconds left that gave UNM a late four-point lead.

The Mountain West-leading Lobos (22-4, 14-1 MW) will play their next two games on the road, visiting Boise State on Feb. 19 and San Diego State on Feb. 25. New Mexico has two home games remaining on their schedule, hosting Air Force on Mar. 1 and UNLV on Mar. 7. Tickets for both of those games are on sale now at GoLobos.com/tickets.
