Cooper Brass Earns MW Freshman of the Week Honors

by Connor Gilbert

After racking up six hits across the first two games of his collegiate career, New Mexico’s Cooper Brass has been named Mountain West Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

The redshirt freshman finished with three hits on both Saturday and Sunday, batting .857 on the weekend (6/7) with a 2.018 OPS (1.143 slugging / .875 on base) — he’s still yet to strike out after this weekend and is tied for second-most hits in the Mountain West heading into week two.

New Mexico went 2-1 on opening weekend at the MLB Desert Invitational, defeating Austin Peay 9-6 on Friday before bouncing back from an 18-4 loss to UC Irvine on Saturday with a 5-3 win over Seton Hall in Sunday’s weekend finale. They now head to Tucson, Ariz. for a road matchup with Arizona.

In his first start at second base, Brass went 3-for-4 in his collegiate debut against UC Irvine on Feb. 15, hitting two doubles and driving in a pair of runs. He followed that up with three hits and a walk in four at-bats in UNM’s 5-3 win over Seton Hall on Feb. 16, scoring two runs and stealing a base. All in all, Brass concluded the weekend without any errors while starting both games at second base, producing four putouts on Sunday.
