Lobos Host Utah State on Sunday in Matchup of Mountain West’s Top Two Teams

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – The Mountain West’s top two teams meet Sunday afternoon as league-leading New Mexico hosts second-place Utah State. The matchup in front of a sold-out crowd at The Pit will tip-off at 2:00 pm and air on CBS Sports Network.

Sunday’s game is sold out, the third sellout of the season for the Lobos. Gates will open at 12:30 pm. It is Retro Day at The Pit, with the Lobos wearing uniforms honoring the 1977-78 team that went 24-4 and won the WAC title with a 13-1 record. The game is also New Mexico’s annual alumni reunion weekend, featuring a halftime ceremony to honor past Lobo players, coaches and managers.

New Mexico (21-4, 13-1 MW) is leading the Mountain West as it has posted its best-ever start to a Mountain West season. The Lobos enter the game on a seven-game win streak, coming off a 71-67 victory over Wyoming on Wednesday. Donovan Dent is leading the Mountain West in scoring at 19.6 points per game and is the only player in the conference on the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team, which was announced Friday.

Utah State (22-3, 12-2 MW) has won three straight and six of the last seven, with its only defeat coming to the Lobos in Logan two weeks ago. The Aggies are led by Ian Martinez, who is fifth in the Mountain West in scoring at 16.9 points per game.

Utah State leads the all-time series 34-14, but the Lobos have won six of the previous 10 matchups at The Pit. New Mexico won the first meeting of the season, 82-63, in Logan two weeks ago, ending the game on a 43-15 run. In last year’s matchup in Albuquerque, the Lobos downed then-No. 16 Utah State 99-86.

The Lobos will play their next two games on the road, visiting Boise State on Feb. 19 and San Diego State on Feb. 25. New Mexico has two home games remaining on their schedule, hosting Air Force on Mar. 1 and UNLV on Mar. 7. Tickets for both of those games are on sale now at GoLobos.com/tickets.
