Lobos in Fifth After Opening Round of John Burns Intercollegiate
LIHUE, Hawaii –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened play Thursday at the John Burns Intercollegiate with the first round at the Ocean Course at Hokuala on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The Lobos shot 2-over during the opening 18 holes to be in fifth place after the opening day.
Utah is the 18-hole leader after shooting 7-under on Thursday. Illinois and UNLV are tied for second at even par, just ahead of BYU in fourth at 1-over and the Lobos in fifth at 2-over.
Mesa Falleur led the Lobos on Thursday with a 2-under opening round 68, highlighted by a stretch of four straight birdies, to be T-7th on the individual leaderboard. Alvaro Portillo is also in red numbers, shooting a 1-under 69 to be T-11th after one round. Clark Sonnenberg shot 1-over, Oliver Cage shot 4-over and Wyatt Provence shot 5-over to round out the lineup. Connor Adams, playing as an individual, shot 4-over.
“I am really proud of how we battled all day,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “It shows a lot about our team that we played the final five holes in four-under par. Today’s finish gives us good momentum going into the second round.”
The John Burns Intercollegiate continues Friday and concludes Saturday on the island of Kauai.
