Men's Tennis To Play Three in Oregon

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico men’s tennis team heads to the Pacific Northwest for a trio of matches, two road and a neutral match over the weekend.  The Lobos will take on host Oregon on Friday night at 6 pm before playing Louisiana in Eugene on Saturday at 1 pm.  After a Sunday off, the squad will take on Portland on Monday morning at 11 am.  Fans will be able to watch the matches on Friday night and Monday morning live, as well as follow the live scoring.

UNM is 1-2 on the season so far, and the squad is on an opening stretch of nine matches over five weeks to open the season, all away from Albuquerque.  UNM opened the season two weeks ago in Texas, losing 7-0 to SMU and 6-1 to Baylor with a 4-3 win over UT Arlington sandwiched in between.

The big highlight was the emerges of No. 1 doubles team Aram Noroozian and Georgio Samaha.  The pairing went 2-0 on the week (and they were one point away from making it a 3-0 week).  The big win was on Sunday, when the duo faced off with Marko Miladinovia and Oskar Brostrom Poulsen, the No. 3 ranked doubles team in the country.  All Aram and Georgio did was put a smackdown on them, winning easily 6-2.  The pair haven’t lost together since October 19 and they have won five straight together.  Last week they made their debut in the ITA doubles rankings, coming in at No. 49.

Three Lobos lead the team with 10 wins each, as Samaha, Noroozian and Daniil Kakhniuk each have 10 wins.

Oregon is 5-2 on the season and have won four straight, dropping just one point over those four matches.  Included in that run is a 7-0 shutout win over Denver.  Len Luemkemenn is 4-2 at the No. 1 singles slot to pace the Ducks.  He teams with Matthew Burton to play No. 1 doubles in what should be a nationally-ranked battle at No. 1 doubles with Noroozian and Samaha.

Louisiana is 4-3 on the season, having won four in a row.  Three have come against lower division teams, but the fourth win is over UT Arlington 4-1, which UNM also defeated 4-3 earlier this year.  Portland is 3-1 on the season and faces both Seattle and Washington before playing UNM on Monday.
