SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The New Mexico women’s golf team began its fall schedule on Monday with the first day of play of the San Diego State Classic at The Heights Golf Club. The Lobos shot 24-over during the opening 36 holes to be tied for ninth with one round to play.

The Lobos shot 7-over during the first round in the morning and 17-over in the second round in the afternoon to finish the day at 24-over. Top-ranked Stanford is the 36-hole leader at 28-under, while UNLV is the only other team under par at 3-under. Georgia is third at 3-over, while Oregon State (6-over) and BYU (7-over) round out the top five.

Freshman Chelsea Truong was the low Lobo on Monday, finishing the day T-22nd at 4-over after a pair of 74 rounds. Maria Garcia and Rebecca Galasso are both at 7-over, while Annie Saechueng and Maria Caparros Levin are both at 11-over through 36 holes.

“We saw a lot of good things today and a lot of mistakes that were avoidable,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “It is the first tournament of the spring and we’ll have better focus tomorrow.”

The San Diego Classic will conclude Tuesday with the final round of play at The Heights Golf Club.
