Lobos Shutout Weber State 7-0
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico was able to take a tenuous doubles point, and they rolled from there without much worry as UNM used a nice comeback in the doubles point to trigger a 7-0 whitewashing of Weber State to earn a split of the weekend. The Lobos head south for matches at UTEP and New Mexico State next weekend.
There was some drama in doubles as the Lobos and Wildcats split the oepning two matches. The Lobos blitzed Weber State at No. 1 doubles as Rebekkah Gaines and Maria Sodre pounced to a 6-1 win. At No. 3 doubles, Sarah O’Connor and Maria Matsoukatidi lost 6-3 in a match that turned at 4-3 when they were broken on a deuce point. THat meant the opening point hinge at No. doubles, and Maud Vandeputte and Sofia Taborga found themselves down a break at 5-2. The two were able to hold serve and then get a break on a deuce point to get back on serve. Down 6-5, Toborga serves out a game in five points to force a tiebreaker.
UNM was down 5-4 in the tiebreak when Vandeputte served two points to give UNM match point. It got there when Taborga fielded a volley and set it into her opponents feet. At match point the Lobos pounced on a second serve and took the set 7-5.
That effectively ended the drama as UNM rolled, winning all 12 singles sets played. Vandeputte made quick qork of Cindy Li for a 6-1, 6-2 win for a 2-0 lead. That was followed by Maria Sodre winning at No. 5 over Savannah Johnson 6-2, 6-2. The Lobos clinched the win when Sofia Taborga took out Aleks Bozinovska 6-3, 6-3.
From there the teams played everything out, and UNM swept the final three matches. Sarah O’Connor, who had a potential win halted yesterday, finished out a 6-4, 6-1 win, taking eight of the last nine games. Maria Matsoukatidi won over Jessica Hill 6-3, 6-2 for a fifth singles win, and Rebekkah Gaines finished it off with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sydney Schnell at No. 1 singles.
