Three Lobos Finish in Double Figures as UNM Loses at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Three Lobos scored in double figures led by 15 from Destinee Hooks, with Viané Cumber at 11 points and Alyssa Hargrove finishing with 13 as UNM lost 90-65 on Saturday.

Hargrove finished with five steals, tying her season high, with UNM credited with nine as a team and the Lobos hit a season-high 15 three-pointers with Hooks, Hargrove and Cumber making three, Paris Lauro two and Reza Po two.

Joana Magalhães scored first the five UNM points on a layup and three, but UNLV used a 13-0 run to go up 15-5. Hooks hit consecutive three-pointers to end the run and pull the Lobos within four, but the Lady Rebels closed with a 7-1 run to lead 22-12 at the end of the first.

The first basket by either team in the second quarter came at the 7:49 mark with UNLV scoring the first eight points of the quarter to extend the deficit to 18. A Po three-pointer at the 5:23 point got the Lobos back on the board with Hooks hitting a basket on the next Lobo possession and Cumber making UNM’s third consecutive shot with her first three of the game to bring UNM within 12. A UNLV run in the final 3:30 of the quarter made it 38-20 at the half with Hooks leading with eight points and Hargrove with three steals.

Four UNLV free throws to start the third put the deficit at 22 with the margin growing to 26 at the end of the third quarter. Hooks hit a three to close the quarter to put the Lobo in double figures as the Lobos trailed 68-45 at the end of the third.

The Lobos made seven three-pointers in the third quarter with Hargrove and Lauro going 2-2 from behind the arc, and in the fourth, the Lobos added three more three-pointers with Cumber going 2-2 as UNM got as close as 17 with 5:51 to play before UNLV extended the margin back to 26. Drew Jordon scored on a fast-break layup and Hargrove added her fifth steal and fast-break layup to close the Lobo scoring before UNLV added a three for the final points of the game.

UNM (13-12, 6-6 MW) returns home to host Boise State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
