Brodie Young Breaks Jarrin Solomon's 400 Record on Day 2 at Collegiate Classic
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Brodie Young broke a nearly 16-year-old record in the men’s 400m and the New Mexico women’s 4×400 relay put down the fastest time in program history to highlight a resurgent day for the Lobos’ sprints group on Day Two of the UNM Collegiate Classic on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
In the first regular-season team scoring meet hosted by UNM at the ABQ Convention Center since 2019, both New Mexico teams held their own against a field that included 24 men’s and women’s squads that entered this week ranked among the Top 50 in the nation. The Lobo women (No. 24 in the nation in this week’s USTFCCCA TFRI rankings) finished 7th in the overall team score with 30 points, while the No. 20 men placed 8th with 25 points in total.
In total, the UNM women beat out six teams that ranked in the Top 50 in the nation this week in the team score, including two that ranked above them (No. 21 LSU and No. 22 TCU). The men outscored five Top-50 teams, with two being ranked above them heading into this week (No. 7 Stanford and No. 18 California). The Lobo men scored five points on Saturday, with Young’s fifth-place finish in the 400m scoring four and the 4×400 relay’s 8th-place finish adding another. The women scored nine points, getting a combined seven from Pouzancre Hoyer and Griever in the 400m and then tacking on two more with a 7th-place finish in the 4×400.
At the top of the table, No. 3 USC won the men’s team score with 101.50 points in total, while women’s No. 3 Texas Tech won with 82.33 points on the women’s side.

- The previous Scottish record of 45.98 — held by Olympian Brian Whittle — had stood for 37 years.
