Lobos Finish Ninth at N.I.T. to Open Spring Schedule
TUCSON, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team wrapped up its first event of the spring schedule on Tuesday with the conclusion of the National Invitational Tournament at OMNI Tucson National. The Lobos shot even par during the final round to finish the event in ninth place at 14-under.
The Lobos shot even par in rounds one and three, sandwiching a 14-under second round that was the second-best score of the round. BYU won the event at 50-under, 14 shots ahead of host Arizona at 36-under.
Mesa Falleur and Alvaro Portillo tied for low Lobo at the event, both finishing T-22nd at 5-under. Falleur rallied from a 5-over first round with rounds of 65 and 69 to shoot 10-under over the final 36 holes. Portillo was the lone UNM player to shoot par of better in all three rounds, recording scores of 71-68-72. Clark Sonnenberg finished the tournament at even par after a final round 73, while Carson Herron finished at 3-over and Wyatt Provence finished at 4-over. Oliver Cage, playing as an individual, finished the tournament at 6-under.
The Lobos return to action Feb. 13-15 with the John Burns Intercollegiate on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
