Lobos in Seventh After Opening Day of The N.I.T.
TUCSON, Ariz. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team began its spring schedule on Monday with the first two rounds of the National Invitational Tournament at OMNI Tucson National. The Lobos shot even par in the morning and 12-under in the afternoon through 15 holes to finish the day in seventh place at 12-under when play was halted for darkness.
BYU holds the lead after Monday’s play at 35-under, nine shots clear of host Arizona at 26-under. Only four shots separate third place New Mexico State at 15-under and Santa Clara in eighth at 11-under.
Alvaro Portillo led the Lobos on Monday, sitting at 4-under, T-18th on the individual leaderboard. After shooting a 1-under 71 in the first round, he is 3-under through 15 holes of his second round. Clark Sonnenberg is at 2-under, shooting even par in round one and 2-under in round two. The best second-round for UNM belongs to Mesa Falleur who is at 6-under with three holes to play, rebounding from a 5-over first round to sit at 1-under overall. Wyatt Provence is even overall after a 1-over first round and 1-under in the second round. Carson Herron is 3-over overall to round out the lineup. Oliver Cage, who is playing as an individual, is the top Lobo on the leaderboard, T-12th at 5-under overall.
The N.I.T concludes Tuesday, with the completion of round two followed by the third round.
