Lobos Sweep Two, Both By Shutout
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico got back on track at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium, sweeping a pair of matches on Saturday, winning 7-0 over Western New Mexico in the morning and then winnig 7-0 over CSU Pueblo in an early afternoon match.
The matches featured a bit of a new-look lineup as all nine players got into the matches. It’s nine because Coumba Ben Niangadou, a fall signee for the spring semester, made her debut with a pair of wins in doubles and in singles. She paired with Maria Matsoukatidi to form an all-freshmen doubles team that won 6-3 over Western and then 6-0 over CSU Pueblo.
In singles, Maud Vandeputte swept her two matches in her season debut in the No. 1 singles slot. Sarah O’Connor played just the morning match in singles against Western before having the nightcap off. Niangadou won both of her singles matches, winning at Nos. 4 and 5. Allison Romero moved into the singles lineup in the afternoon match and picked up her career-high fifth singles win of the season, winning 6-0, 6-3 in the afternoon match.
Overall, UNM did not lose a set in sweeping the two matches. The Lobos return to McKinnon tomorrow to take on Gonzaga at 11 am.
