Lobos Visit Utah State in Battle of Mountain West Leaders

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M – The New Mexico men’s basketball team concludes a two-game road trip on Saturday by visiting Utah State in a matchup of the Mountain West co-leaders. Game time is 7:30 pm at the Smith Spectrum and the game will air on FS1 and the Lobo Radio Network.

New Mexico (17-4, 9-1 MW) is tied for the best start to a Mountain West schedule in program history with a 9-1 mark at the midway point of league play. The Lobos are coming off a 75-73 victory at UNLV last Saturday as Donovan Dent scored 34 points and Nelly Junior Joseph had 22 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Dent leads the Mountain West in scoring and is second in assists, while Joseph leads the conference in rebounds and double-doubles.

Utah State (19-2, 9-1 MW) is coming off a 76-71 home win over UNLV on Wednesday to avenge its only conference loss. The Aggies are 11-1 at home this season, and are led by Ian Martinez, who is averaging 16.7 points per game.

Utah State leads the all-time series 34-13, including an 18-2 mark in Logan and a 7-2 record at the Smith Spectrum. The Aggies have won eight of the last nine overall, but the teams split last season with each team winning at home.

New Mexico returns home to host Colorado State (8-2 MW) on Wednesday. Tickets for that game are on sale at GoLobos.com/tickets.
