Donovan Dent Named Mountain West Player of the Week
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Donovan Dent was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Dent was honored after leading the Lobos to wins over Fresno State and at UNLV to keep UNM in first place of the conference standings.
Dent’s honor is his third of the season, as he was also honored on Dec. 23 and Jan. 13, and the fourth of his career. He becomes the first Lobo to earn three awards in a season since Elijah Brown in 2015-16. Dent and Nelly Junior Joseph (two) have combined for five Mountain West Player of the Week awards this season, tying the UNM record for most honors in a season (also five total in 2007-08, 2009-10 and 2012-13).
Over the two victories, Dent averaged 27.0 points, 5.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 22-38 (57.9%) from the floor and 8-9 (88.9%) from the line. His play helped the Lobos improve to 9-1 in conference play, matching the program’s best start to a Mountain West season.
Dent had 20 points, nine assists and no turnovers in the Lobos’ 95-67 victory on Monday over Fresno State. It was his second 20 point/9 assist/0 turnover game of the season, making him the only player in the nation to record that statline twice this season. In the 75-73 win at UNLV on Saturday, Dent scored 34 points, his conference career high and the most by any player in a Mountain West game this season. It was his third 30-point game of the season as he is the only player in the nation this season with three 30-point games and three 10-assist games.
The Lobos (17-4, 9-1 MW) will have the mid-week off before visiting Utah State (8-1 MW) on Saturday. New Mexico returns home to host Colorado State (7-2 MW) on Feb. 5. Tickets for that game are on sale at GoLobos.com/tickets.
