Dave Williams To Depart After Six Years with UNM Athletics
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Dave Williams, who has served as Assistant Vice President and Deputy A.D. for UNM Athletics, and also served as Interim VP/AD for the fall of 2024 will depart from UNM after this week to become Senior Deputy A.D. for the University of Houston, where he will join former UNM VP/AD Eddie Nuñez. Williams’ last day is Friday, January 31.
Williams came to UNM in January of 2019 after serving as the Deputy AD for the final four of his six years at the University of South Dakota. Williams’ experiences include athletic director positions at University of Wisconsin-Parkside (2000-08), Missouri Western State University (2008-11) and Kentucky Wesleyan College (2011-13).
“I am deeply grateful for my six years at the University of New Mexico. We have made lifelong friends and memories. In particular, I’d like to thank Eddie Nunez and President Garnett Stokes, who I have worked so closely with in my time here. Lobo Athletics is in good hands with the administration, coaches and staff that are in place,” said Williams.
“While it is difficult to say goodbye, I am excited about the opportunities ahead at the University of Houston and look forward to contributing to the University and Cougar Athletics in any way possible. UNM has a special place in my heart,” added Williams.
In his time with UNM, Williams oversaw external affairs, marketing, tickets, licensing and other revenue generation areas. He also was instrumental in working with Nuñez on the hiring of men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino and football and most recently he worked with new Vice President/Athletic Director Fernando Lovo in the hiring of football coach Jason Eck. Williams also served as a sports coordinator for various sports including football and men’s basketball.
“I’m grateful for Dave’s wisdom and counsel,” said Lovo. “I know that Dave will bring to Houston the same work ethic and passion he gave to Lobo Athletics over the past six years.”
