Lobos Fall to No. 5 Virginia in Opening Round of ITA Kickoff Classic
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The No. 5 University of Virginia Cavaliers are a national title contender, and the Lobos gave a game effort in their season opener, but UNM lost 4-0 to UVA in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Classic. The Lobos will face either No. 7 Duke or No. 20 South Carolina in the consolation round of the ITA Kickoff Classic.
The Lobos had the tall task of not just facing the No. 5 team in the country, but three nationally-ranked doubles teams and three nationally-ranked individuals. In doubles, the Cavs took Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to open up a 1-0 lead. In singles, No. 94 Martina Genis Salas defeated Sarah O’Connor and then No. 32 Annabelle Xu beat Rebekkah Gaines at No. 1 singles for a 3-0 Virginia lead.
Needing just one more point, the Isabelle Lacy beat Maria Sodre at No. 4 singles for the 4-0 win. While UNM was shutout, UNM had a shot at No. 2 singles as senior Maud Vandeputte went toe-to-toe with No. 34 Elaine Chervinsky, and was even at 6-4, 2-3 when the match was halted.
NOTES: UNM’s match on Saturday will take place at 4:30 pm Mountain Time on Saturday … Virginia improved to 5-0.
