New Mexico (15-4, 7-1 MW) is leading the Mountain West and has tied the best eight-game start to a Mountain West season in program history, matching the 7-1 starts in 2012-13 and 2013-14. The Lobos are coming off an 84-65 win over conference preseason favorite Boise State on Friday night at The Pit, a game that featured UNM holding a 27-point halftime lead (48-21), their largest ever halftime lead in a Mountain West game.
Fresno State (5-13, 1-6 MW) is coming off a 74-65 home win over Air Force on Friday night to snap a six-game losing streak. The Bulldogs have three of the top 20 scorers in the Mountain West during conference play, with Alex Crawford, Zaon Collins and Jalen Weaver all averaging over 12 points per game in league games this season.
Fresno State leads the all-time series 21-20, but New Mexico has won 13 of the previous 16 meetings in The Pit. The Lobos have won the last three meetings, including a 103-89 win at the Save Mart Center on New Year’s Eve. That game featured 87 possessions between two of the 10 fastest teams in the nation, the highest tempo for a Mountain West game in seven seasons. New Mexico is looking to sweep the season series with Fresno State for the first time since 2012-13.
The Lobos will play their next two games on the road, visiting UNLV on Jan. 25 and Utah State on Feb. 1 before returning home to host Colorado State on Feb. 5.
