Donovan Dent Named Mountain West Player of the Week

by Steve Kirkland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Donovan Dent was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Dent was honored after leading the Lobos to wins at Wyoming and over San Diego State as UNM remained unbeaten in conference play.

Dent’s honor is his second of the season, as he was also honored on Dec. 23, and the third of his career. It is the second straight week a Lobo has earned the award, as Nelly Junior Joseph was recognized last week, marking the first time in five years that Lobos have earned the award in consecutive weeks. With Joseph having been honored twice this season as well, the Lobos have four total Player of the Week awards for the first time since 2013-14 and have two players earn multiple awards for the first time since 2009-10 (Darington Hobson & Roman Martinez)

Over the two victories, Dent averaged 19.0 points, 5.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game, while shooting 12-25 (48.0%) from the floor and 13-15 (86.7%) from the line. His play helped the Lobos improve to 6-0 in conference play, the program’s best start to a Mountain West season and best start to a conference schedule in 47 years.

Dent had 22 points and six assists in the Lobos’ 61-53 victory on Tuesday at Wyoming. He scored 13 of his 22 points in the second half as New Mexico erased a 14-point halftime deficit, its biggest second-half comeback in 12 seasons. In Saturday’s win over the Aztecs, Dent scored a game-high 16 points and had five assists. Dent is the Mountain West leader in both scoring and assists.

The Lobos (14-3, 6-0 MW) will visit San Jose State on Tuesday (8:00 pm MT, MW Network) before returning home to host Boise State on Friday. The game against the Broncos will air on FS1 and tip-off at 9:00 pm. Tickets are available at GoLobos.com/tickets.
