2025 Men's Tennis Schedule Features Seven Home Matches

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Rob Bareford era of Lobo Men’s Tennis officially gets underway on January 31 at SMU of the ACC, the first of 21 regular season matches that will culminate in the Mountain West Tournament in Las Vegas at Darling Tennis Center April 23-25.  Overall, UNM will play seven matches at home, 11 away and three neutral matches.  Overall UNM will face seven teams that advanced to the postseason, including six teams that played in the NCAA Tournament.

“We have an extremely tough schedule this year as we play some of the best teams in the country,” said first year Lobo head coach Rob Bareford, who previously led Montana State and Radford.  “We want to continue to battle with the best and continue to climb up the rankings.”

Three of those will be in UNM’s first three matches.  The Lobos will open the schedule in Texas for the first of nine straight away from the Duke City.  UNM will open with three straight road matches in Texas, at SMU, UT Arlington and Baylor. All three opponents went to the NCAA Tournament and combined to go 47-31 on the year.  After a weekend off, UNM will go out for another three-match weekend, taking on Oregon, Louisiana and Portland.  The following weekend will see UNM travel to face South Alabama, Middle Tennessee State and Utah, all in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  The MTSU Blue Raiders went 21-10 last year in advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s Second Round.

UNM finally returns home for its first home match on March 7 against Wichita State, and then UNM hosts Santa Clara, a team that went 19-8 and played into the semifinals of the UTR Sports NIT.  UNM travels to face NMSU before returning home for three straight, including its opening conference match.  The Lobos host Northern Arizona on March 21 and UTSA on March 23 before opening conference play on March 27 hosting Nevada.

From there, UNM travels north to face Air Force and Denver on back-to-back days.  Denver last year went 23-1, winning its first 23.  It’s closest match in the winning streak was a 4-3 win over New Mexico at McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium.  From there UNM sprints to the finish with San Diego State, UNLV, Utah State and Boise State, the defending conference champions.  SDSU went 16-7 last year, Utah State was 18-5 and Boise State was 20-11.

The Mountain West Tournament will once again be hosted by UNLV at Darlin Tennis Center, from Wednesday through Friday, April 23-25.
