Nelly Junior Joseph Named Mountain West Player of the Week

by Steve Kirkland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Nelly Junior Joseph was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Joseph was honored after leading the Lobos to wins over Nicholls and No. 22 UCLA last week.

Joseph’s honor is his first career Mountain West Player of the Week honor. It is his eighth career conference player of the week honor, as he was a seven-time MAAC Player of the Week selection over his three seasons at Iona.

Joseph opened the season on Monday with a 28-point, 16 rebound performance in the victory over Nicholls. The 28 points tied his career high, while his 16 rebounds matched his UNM high. In the 72-64 victory over No. 22 UCLA on Friday in the Las Vegas Hoopfest, Joseph had 16 points and 12 rebounds. The pair of double-doubles give him 45 for his career, the fourth most among active Division I players. For the week, he shot 58 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the free throw line.

The Lobos, who are receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches polls this week, return home to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night at The Pit. Game time is 7:00 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at GoLobos.com/tickets.
