Lobos Drop Conference Home Opener
Albuquerque, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving competed in their first – and only – home conference meet of the season on Saturday, as they fell to the University of Nevada by a score of 209-89. The Lobos (1-3, 0-2 MW) have now lost their first two conference meets for the fourth consecutive season. The 209 points that the Wolfpack (4-0, 2-0 MW) scored are the program’s most in a dual meet since January 30, 2016, against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
New Mexico won just one event against the Wolfpack on Saturday, as freshman Arianna Stokes took home a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.69).
The Lobos did, however, have a handful of second-place finishes, courtesy of freshman Ellie Broughton in both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:28.22) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.04), senior Paige Lyons in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:00.49), freshman Emily Ford in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.59), and freshman Eryn Quirsfeld in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.02).
On the diving side of things, junior Isabella Gomez paced the Lobos with third-place finishes off both the 3-meter board (284.33) and the 1-meter board (259.88). Sophomore Alice English placed fourth in both events (241.13 off the 3-meter board, 207.00 off the 1-meter board).
New Mexico’s swimmers and divers will be back in action November 20-22, as they will compete in the annual Phil Hansel Invitational in Houston, Texas. The Lobos will return to the Seidler Natatorium for their final home meet of the season on February 8th, against rival New Mexico State.
