by Allison Weiss

FORT COLLINS, Colo.— Presley Devey scored her eighth goal of the season off of a New Mexico corner kick in the 83rd minute to prevent the shutout as Colorado State won 3-1 on Thursday evening.

The Rams took a 2-0 lead into the half after opening the scoring in the 23rd minute and adding a second goal right before the half. CSU went up 3-0 on a goal in the 64th minute before Devey closed the scoring with an unassisted goal at 82:10.

CSU had the first chance with a free kick in the seventh minute, but Callie Droitsch gathered it off the bounce and had its second corner kick in the eighth minute that was ultimately collected by the Lobo keeper for the save. The Rams took four shots in the first 21 minutes with Droitsch making two saves with the fifth shot breaking through, going bottom right for the goal.

For UNM, its first solid look came in the 11th minute on a corner kick, with CSU heading it out for a second corner, which resulted in a Devey shot that landed on the top of the net. Nicole Anderson followed it up with a chance 40 seconds later that required a CSU save, the first of four shots on goal for the Lobos in the first 45 minutes of play.

After the initial goal, the Lobo defense fended off five CSU corner kicks before CSU scored its second goal at 42:05 after the Lobos were unable to clear the ball, and while Kennedy Brown blocked the initial shot, it landed right back at the foot of a Ram, who went high and just off of Droitsch’s outstretched left hand and into the net.

CSU took a total of 13 shots in the first half compared to six for UNM, but had five shots on goal compared to four for UNM.  The Rams also had eight corner kicks in the opening half compared to two for the Lobos.

The Lobos strung together consecutive shots by Anderson (saved at 54:57) and Natalie DeGagne (wide right at 55:52) with Brown forcing another CSU save at 57:41, but it was the Rams who scored first in the second half.

UNM couldn’t clear the ball and the Rams capitalized with their third goal in the 64th minute as the ball slid bottom right past Droitsch.

Two more shots by Fiona Jenkins (74:02) and Logan Nicholson (78:39) went wide right before Devey put the Lobos on the board. Jenkins took the corner kick, sending it into the middle of the box and found the foot of Devey, who went top right for the goal.

UNM took two more shots on goal late in the match with Taryn Robles (88:02) and Devey (89:53) attempting to further cut into the lead, with both resulting in saves for the 3-1 final. The Lobos took a total of nine shots in the second half, five on goal for a total of 15 shots, nine on goal in the match. Devey led the Lobos with four shots and three on goal and on the other end, Droitsch made five saves on 23 shots, eight on goal.

With Thursday’s result, the Lobos’ four-match unbeaten streak was snapped and head to Wyoming with a 7-5-4 record, 3-4-2 record in conference, currently sitting one point ahead of both Wyoming and Nevada in the standings with two matches left.
