Galasso Shines in Opening Round of Ron Moore Intercollegiate
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – The New Mexico women’s golf team began play Friday at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate with the opening round at the University of Denver Golf Course at Highlands Ranch. The Lobos shot 6-over during the opening 18 holes to end the day in 12th place.
Host Denver and Minnesota share the round one lead, each at 8-under. Colorado State (6-under), Texas State (5-under) and UNLV (4-under) round out the top five.
The Lobos were led on Friday by sophomore Rebecca Galasso, who shot under par for the first time in her collegiate career, carding a 2-under 70 to be T-13th on the individual leaderboard. Freshman Maria Garcia is at 1-over, as is Ciara Rushmer, who tied her low collegiate round with a 73 while playing as an individual. Freshman Chelsea Truong shot 3-over, her best round of the season, while Annie Saechueng and Maria Caparros Levin rounded out the lineup with rounds of 76 and 78, respectively.
“Our underclassmen held steady and solid,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “It was great to see Rebecca have her first under par collegiate round. Tomorrow we need to have a total team effort for us to move up the leaderboard.”
The tournament will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday at the University of Denver Golf Course at Highlands Ranch.
