Maria Garcia Named Mountain West Freshman of the Month
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico’s Maria Garcia was named the Mountain West Women’s Freshman of the Month for September, conference officials announced Thursday. Garcia was honored after two strong performances during the opening month of the season.
The honor marks the first time a Lobo has been named Mountain West Freshman of the Month/Week since the award debuted during the 2021-22 season.
In the Lobos’ season opener, the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course, Garcia shot 1-over to finish T-10th, marking the first Lobo to have a top-10 in her collegiate debut since 2008-09. Her performance at the tournament included a season-best 3-under round of 69 during her first collegiate round. Later in the month, she added a top-25 finish at the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
The Lobos return to action Oct. 4-6 with the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Denver. New Mexico will be playing in the inaugural NB3 Matchplay next Tuesday and Wednesday, a made-for-TV event at Twin Warriors Golf Club at Santa Ana Pueblo. The event features the men’s and women’s teams from UNM, Stanford, Texas and New Mexico State and will air on Golf Channel.
