Robin Cole to be Inducted into Ring of Honor Saturday

by Frank Mercogliano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Robin Cole is remembered for a lot of things, his signature turquoise jersey among them.  He is one of the all-time greats in Lobo Football history, and on Saturday he will have his name enshrined among the other all-time greats as he is formally inducted into the Ring of Honor.

Cole will become the seventh player to have his name permanently displayed at University Stadium, joining Mike Williams, Bobby Santiago, Don Perkins, Brian Urlacher (all 2013), DonTrell Moore (2021) and Terance Mathis (2023).

Cole played at UNM from 1973-76 and he still ranks in the career top-10 in tackles for loss and he is one of six players with more than 400 tackles, and he is the only defensive lineman on the list. He ranks second in career sacks, and he led UNM three straight seasons in sacks.  His 17 sacks in a 10-game season in 1975 is still the UNM single-season record.  In 1976 he was a third team All-American and the WAC Defensive Player of the Year.

After his UNM career he played 12 seasons in the NFL including 11 with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being drafted in the first round.  He won two Super Bowls and he was runner-up for Super XIV MVP honors.  He was elected to the Pro Bowl in 1984 and he is a member of the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, the 20-Year All-WAC team and the Albuquerque Press Hall of Fame.

Along with the Robin Cole Ring of Honor ceremony, the following events are taking place this weekend around UNM’s conference opener with Fresno State.
