Lobos Fall in Four in Lumberjack Classic Finale

by Connor Gilbert

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — New Mexico Volleyball came within a point of forcing a fifth set for the second day in a row in its Lumberjack Classic finale matchup with Tarleton (1-6) on Friday afternoon but was undone by a furious set-point rally from the Texas to fall in four sets (18-25, 25-19, 23-25, 27-29).

The Lobos (5-3) racked up 41 kills over the final three sets after being held to just eight in the first, leaning on six kills from true freshman Seenane Brewer and four from Lauryn Payne in a 15-kill second set to tie things up before falling up short in a pair of tightly-contested sets that followed.

Brewer and Payne both finished with 11 kills each to lead UNM’s attack, with Jada Bouyer adding 10 more — Payne and Bouyer have finished with double-digit kills in three straight matches, with Brewer recording a new career-high. Naomi Chankoumi and Liepa Lavickyte both added six more each, with Elizabeth Woods finishing with four on team-high .333 hitting.

Six Lobos finished with five or more digs, led by Falanika Danielson with 10 — Danielson served up three aces, making it five matches in a row with at least one ace with five aces in her last seven sets.
