MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. –– The New Mexico men’s golf team opened the 2024-25 season Sunday with the opening two rounds of the Gopher Invitational. The Lobos shot 17-over during the 36 holes at Windsong Farm Golf Club to sit in ninth place with one round to play.

The Lobos shot 16-over during the morning’s first round, before shooting 1-over in the afternoon during the second round. Iowa is the 36-hole leader at 3-over, one shot ahead of host Minnesota. Kent State (7-over), Nebraska (8-over) and Marquette (10-over) round out the top five.

Mesa Falleur, making his Lobo debut after transferring from Kansas City, led UNM on Sunday and is at even par for the tournament after a 1-over first round and a 1-under second round. Alvaro Portillo is at 2-over, bouncing back from a 4-over first round with a 2-under second round. Carson Herron and Clark Sonnenberg are both at 8-over through 36 holes, while Wyatt Provence is at 10-over.

“After a sloppy opening round, the team battled back with a gritty round of 1-over par, which was one of the low rounds of the afternoon,” said head coach Jake Harrington. “It was great to see Mesa play well both rounds and have Alvaro shoot 69 in the afternoon to give us some momentum going into tomorrow.”

The Gopher Invitational conclude Monday with the final round at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
