Lobo Athletics Announces Creation of NIL Strategy Team

by Steve Kirkland

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico athletic department formally announced this week the creation of a new internal team that will guide the department’s strategy for Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) for Lobo student-athletes. The group will collaborate with 505 Sports Venture Foundation (505 SVF), the collective established to enhance NIL opportunities for Lobo student-athletes, to ensure that New Mexico remains a leader in NIL into the future.

In the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics, UNM’s team will allow it to remain on the forefront of legislation and trends, ensuring that Lobo student-athletes will maximize their NIL opportunities. The partnership with 505 SVF, now permitted by the NCAA, will allow UNM to help guide the growth of NIL deals in the future while providing education to student-athletes that will allow them to magnify their profile.

New Mexico’s NIL resources, already among the largest in the Group of Five and on par with some power conference schools, will continue to grow and expand with the guidance of the new team.

The team will be headed by Jalen Dominguez, Senior Associate AD and Executive Director of the Lobo Club, under direction of Deputy Athletic Director David Williams, and will include members of several departments within UNM athletics, including Lobo Club, communications, compliance, creative services, marketing & revenue generation, ticketing and UNM Sports Properties.

Lobo fans are reminded that all contributions, whether to the Lobo Club or 505 SVF, greatly benefit UNM athletics and Lobo student athletes. To contribute, visit unmloboclub.com and 505sports.org.

“The development of an internal NIL strategy team for the benefit of Lobo student-athletes has been a priority. I have asked the team to focus on development of new NIL business opportunities, community impact, and education, all for the benefit of our student-athletes. Additionally, the team will work collaboratively with 505 SVF, CEO Kurt Roth and his team to further the success of the official collective of Lobo Athletics.” – Eddie Nunez, UNM Vice President/Director of Athletics

“I’m thankful for and proud of the work by 505 Sports Venture Foundation over the past few years. Kurt Roth was an early adopter of Name, Image and Likeness and the result has been that UNM student-athletes have benefitted. Our coaches have gained a competitive advantage and now that NCAA guidance allows further collaboration between athletic departments and collectives, UNM athletics is committing to the strategic cooperation that will grow that advantage.” – David Williams, UNM Assistant VP/Deputy AD

“I am excited to work with a talented team within Lobo Athletics, in collaboration with Kurt Roth and his team at 505 SVF. We have already seen a significant impact on our programs through the efforts of SVF and the newly launched Lobo Alliance. The goal is to continue to be a leader in the NIL space, providing high-level opportunities for our student-athletes and a competitive advantage for all of our programs.” – Jalen Dominguez, Senior Associate AD and Executive Director of the Lobo Club
